Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils are fractionated sharply by fractional condensation and/or distillation so as to obtain one or more fractions boiling entirely above 70 DEG C. and of such purity as to contain no components of the next lower or higher boiling fraction. The sharp fractionation is obtained by increasing the reflux ratio to the fractionating column and by providing additional heating of the column, i.e. by drawing off fractions from intermediate levels in the column and heating them and returning them to the column at the same level. Several columns may be used in series the residue from one column being drawn off, heated in a pipe still and introduced into the following column. The fractions thus prepared are stated to have end-points which do not overlap when determined by the A.S.T.M. method. The following fractions can be prepared--Light gasoline (40--100 DEG C.); light gasoline (110--135 DEG ) heavy gasoline (140--165 DEG ); light kerosene (168--190 DEG ); heavy kerosene (200--250 DEG ); gas oil (255--300 DEG ). If products of different ranges are required two of the above fractions may be mixed together in the required proportions.
