450,443. Producing yarns of flax or other bast fibres. PLATT BROS. & CO. (HOLDINGS), Ltd., Hartford Works, Oldham, SMITH, F. E., Normanton, Chelsfield Lane, Chelsfield, Kent, and WILKINSON, H., Hartford Works, Oldham. Oct. 17, 1934, Nos. 29706 /34 and 26658/35. [Class 120 (iii)] Yarn is produced from flax or other bast fibres such as jute, hemp or rainie by a process comprising all the following steps in the given sequence; (a) separation of the bast fibre from the straw in straw-loosening and bark stripping machines A, A<1> (b) opening in straw loosening, stripping, opening, cleaning and tow making machines, e.g. porcupine openers B, (c) passing through vertical opener cleaning- machines, e.g. Crighton openers C with condenser dust extractors B<2>, B<3>, (d) passing through horizontal and vertical cylinder cleaners B<1>, C<1> with condenser dust extractors, (e) passing through a lap machine E to be made into a lap, and after the step (a) or any one of the steps (b), (c) and(d) washing, squeezing rinsing, squeezing and drying in machines W, W<2>. The order of the steps (b) and (c) may be reversed. After step (c) the material may be opened in a hard waste opener D, which reduces the length of the fibres. If desired, the fibre produced may be mixed with cotton wool or synthetic fibre, carded and subsequently treated in the manner usually employed in the treatment of cotton. The laps may be blended in any desired proportions in the scutchers E, E<1> and pass from thence to a carding engine G which " stabilizes " or reduces the length of the long fibres to the average length of the short fibres in the lap. F, F<1> are hopper feeders.
