[Class 79 (iii)] [See also Group XXIX] To prevent unauthorized release of hydraulically or like operated brakes on motor vehicles, a non-return valve 26 adapted to be put in or out of action by key -operated means is provided in the fluid conduit. When the valve is out of action, the brakes can be applied and released in the ordinary way but when it is operative, as shown, fluid pressure can be applied to the brakes but cannot be released. The valve 26 occupies a chamber 24 in aT-union 20 connecting a pump 31 to a conduit 30 supplying four-wheel hydraulic brakes. The valve is normally kept open by a cam or eccentric 16 on a rod 15 passing through a packing gland 18 and adapted to be rotated through a flexible steel wire 7 by the key 2 of a rotary barrel lock 1 on the dashboard, the rotary element 3 of the lock being formed with a pair of lugs 4 engaging notches in a flanged disc 6 attached to the end of the wire. The valve is shown in action so that, to release the brakes, the key has to be turned to rotate the cam 16. A projection 32 in the casing engages a recess 33 in the cam to limit the angle of rotation. In a form for operating mechanical brakes, a fluid pressure cylinder containing a spring-pressed piston is connected to the valve chamber 24, the piston rod being directly connected to the arm of a rock shaft operating the brakes.
