Abstract

448,752. Fuel injectors. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. Oct. 31, 1935, No. 30081. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] In a fuel injector having a valve B<1> opened by fluid-pressure against the action of a spring D bearing on an abutment E, E<1>, which can be moved by manually controlled means to vary the spring pressure, stops are provided to limit the movements of the abutment. The abutment E<1>, Fig. 1, normally bears against a screw-threaded stop F which is initially adjusted in the injector body A; at starting, the rod G is rotated by a hand wheel G<2> to increase the spring pressure until a stop G<3> contacts with the stop F. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the position of the abutments of several injectors A in the same or different engine cylinders is determined by pistons H subjected to the pressure in a fluid-pressure system K, K<1>. Normally, the abutment bears against an adjustable stop F<2> but during starting a hand wheel K<3> is operated to increase the fluid pressure and lower the abutment until the piston H<1> contacts with the stop F<2>. As the hand wheel K3 is moved to reduce the fluid pressure additional fluid may be drawn into the system to compensate for leakage. The manually controlled member which may control all the injectors of a multi-cylinder engine, may be formed by the manually controlled member of the starting apparatus.
