Abstract

448,549. Electromagnetic switches. VEREINIGTE EISENBAHN - SIGNALWERKE GES., Blockwerk, Siemensstadt, Berlin. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34380. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1934. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit arrangement in a railway installation for controlling an electromagnetic relay arranged to be operated at a low potential under the control of a wheeloperated contacting device which may be operated at high speeds includes a condenser connected to be charged or discharged upon operation of the said wheeloperated contacting device, the said condenser being so connected that in the first case the discharge and in the second case the charging of the condenser controls the operation of the relay. As shown in Fig. 1, the windings 1, 2 of a relay in series with a resistance 3 are shunted by a condenser 4 which, when a wheel treadle 5 is operated is charged, resistance 6 representing the line resistance The current flowing through the windings 1, 2 on closure of the treadle switch 5 does not sufficiently energize these windings to attract the armature, but when the treadle switch is again opened, the discharge of the condenser 4 through a circuit including the winding 2 and a condenser 7 supplies to the relay a sufficient number of ampere-turns to attract the armature with certainty. In a modified arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the condenser 8 is connected across the switch 5 in series with the relay 9 so as to be discharged when the switch is closed. The charging current on opening of the switch 5 passes through the relay 9 and lasts sufficiently long to cause the relay to attract its armature. A combination of the two methods Fig. 3 (not shown), may also be employed.
