[Class 83 (i)] [See also Group II] In the preparation of foundry moulding materials where the material is fed by combined rotational and gravitational effects through a rotary cylindrical envelope or drum, and in which the material is subjected to disintegration during a stage of its transit, flexible elements attached to and rotating with the envelope or drum and interacting with one another are used for the latter purpose. The rotatable drum a is built-up in sections and is adapted to extend across a foundry between mould-charging and discharging regions. The latter region, at the raised end of the drum has hopper or other means to supply the drum with used and fresh sand. The material is first subjected to a lifting, tumbling and forward movement by vanes d, Fig. 6, arranged within the drum, it then passes to a smooth portion of the drum and undergoes further mixing before being subjected to pounding action by means of chain loops g suspended from the periphery of the drum. Heavy rollers v, Fig. 7, suspended by chains may be used in addition to the chain loops g. The material finally passes to a sieve f to be collected for use. A fan may be arranged to create a draught through the drum for dust extraction and spray pipes may be provided to raise the moisture content of the mixture. A magnetic separator may also be employed at the sieve end.
