Class 86 A machine for mixing compost having a straw basis comprises an elevator 5 which raises materials from a loading hopper 4 into an elevated hopper 12 which is fitted with a transverse axle or drum 13 arranged for rotary oscillation and having spikes 15 which interdigitate with the teeth of a fixed comb or combs 20, which teeth extend wholly or partly across the lower part of the hopper 12. The spikes 15 may be in two rows spaced at an angle of less than 180 degrees to each other, preferably at 115 degrees, and are preferably arranged in parallel spiral formation around the drum 13. The drum 13 is oscillated through an angle substantially the same as the angle between the rows of spikes 15 by means of a crank 16 and connecting rod 17, from a disc 18 on the driving shaft' 19 of the elevator which is of the endless chain drive scraper type. A fixed comb 11 is suspended over the top end of the elevator whereby the material is partly teased out before delivery into the hopper 12. Water or chemical may be sprayed over the material in the hopper 12 through a perforated transverse tube 21. The material discharged from the hopper 12 may be received in a box adjustably and detachably fitted to the machine beneath the hopper 12.
