[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a gas engine, a main inlet valve a carries on its stem a gas-inlet valve d connected to a slide valve b controlling inlet of compressed air through ports c, the arrangement being such that, when the valve a commences to open on the inlet stroke, compressed air is first admitted through the ports c to scavenge out the exhaust gases, after which the valve d is opened to admit gas from the passage e, while just before the valve a closes again, compressed air is again admitted through the ports c. The gas valve d is loose on the stem of the valve a, being pressed to its seat by a spring f inside the valve, and has a piston-like extension on its head which obstructs the inlet of gas until the valve a has opened a certain amount. By removing the valves band d, and cutting off the gas supply, the engine may be converted into an oil engine, the valve a serving to admit air under pressure only. Where air is supplied to a multicylinder engine by a rotary blower, a byepass valve between the suction and delivery sides of the blower may be actuated so as to open when all the poppet valves or the slide valves are closed, thus allowing delivery of air by the blower only when the valves for admitting the same are open.
