444,914. Links; breaking - pieces. HUMPHRIS, F., Park House, Park Road, Parkstone, Dorset. Nov. 24, 1934, No. 33808. [Classes 80 (iii) and 80 (iv)] A yieldable link for presses or other machines has two or more resilient elements on or around a spring-guide-rod and two thrust plates thereon, which serve to grip a yieldable element, one or more of the resilient elements and one thrust plate operating to transmit pressure to one shoulder of an enlargement of the spring-guide-rod, and another one or more of the resilient elements and the other thrust plate operating to transmit pressure to another shoulder of the enlargement over which the yieldable element is adapted to slide. The link, which connects two pivot joints g, m, Fig. 2, comprises a spring-guide-rod c with enlargement c<1> one or more springs a bearing on a thrust plate n, one or more springs b bearing on a thrust plate o, and a yieldable element h sliding over the enlargement c<1>, and connected to the joint m. The springs a, b are initially compressed. The enlargement has abutment shoulders c<2>, c<3>, Figs. 5, 6. When an abutment face h<3> of the yieldable element is moved to cause plate n to compress spring a, Fig. 5, to an extent in excess of the normal, the plate n leaves the shoulder c<2> and an abutment face h<4> of the element h leaves the plate o which still maintains contact with shoulder c<3> of the enlargement c<1> and therefore the initial compression given to spring b is not affected. Further, when the face h<4> moves the plate o, Fig. 6, to compress the spring b, the plate leaves the shoulder c<3> and the abutment face h<3> leaves plate n which remains on shoulder c<2> and therefore the initial compression in spring a is not affected. The springs are normally held in compression against the thrust plates by adjustable devices j, q the former being guided within the element h. In a modification the element h consists of a number of columns, and these serve to guide the part corresponding to j. In a further construction, each of the springs a, b is replaced by a number of springs. The coupling g, Fig. 2, may be connected to the rod c through a safety tube e and shear pin d. During normal working no variation occurs of the distance between the axes of the joints g, m. The yieldable element may be provided with a screw-threaded adjusting part h<1> to provide for an increase or decrease in the distance between faces h<3>, h<4> or for taking up wear. Flats on the rod c are provided for holding it during adjustment of the devices j, q.
