Abstract

444,805. Lathes. HERBERT, Ltd., A., and BATES, G. F., Canal Road, Edgwick, Coventry. Nov. 20, 1935, No. 32137. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe has a number of guides at least one of which is oscillated responsively to the main spindle speed and with which a tool-slide co-operates in succession in the course of its travel along the workpiece. The workpiece 12, Fig. 1, an aluminium alloy piston blank, is carried by the lathe spindle 13 which also carries fast on it an oval cam 15. The latter engages a roller 16 mounted in a lever 17 which is pivoted at 18 about a vertical axis. An abutment 24, on a tool slide 23 carrying a diamond tool 22, engages a guide surface 26, adjustably secured to the lever 17, and the tool is thereby recipro- . cated a varying amount as the lever oscillates, producing a portion of variable ovality on the workpiece. One end of the workpiece may be turned circular by the abutment 24 engaging a straight fixed guide portion attached to the bed. In a modification, where constant ovality of the workpiece is required, Fig. 4, the lever 17a is arranged to pivot on a horizontal axis 18a, the roller 16a engaging the cam 15a vertically above its axis, and the guide 26a thus imparting a uniform reciprocation to the tool slide as the abutment moves successively along the guide.
