Abstract
444,068. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 12, 1934, Nos. 26194 and 26195. Convention dates, Sept. 13, 1933 and June 13, 1934. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine-starter drive, a starter pinion 2 is driven from a power shaft 1 through a nut and screw system and a yielding driving connection such as a spring 7 until the pinion engages an engine member 3, whereupon the pinion is driven partly through the spring 7 and partly through a number of normally open friction clutches which are closed before the cranking torque is applied to the spring 7. As shown, the drive spring 7 is anchored by a bolt 9 to a driving head 11 formed on or fixed to a sleeve 15 keyed to the shaft 1. The other end of the spring 7 is anchored by a stud 8 to the end of a hollow screw shaft 4 freely journalled on the sleeve 15. A nut 5 threaded on the screw shaft is rigidly connected by a barrel 6 to the pinion 2, which is slidably journalled on the shaft 1. The nut 5 is normally retained by a light spring 19 on a smooth portion 17 of the screw shaft 4, and re-engagement of the nut with the screw thread is ensured by a compression spring 18 between the end of the barrel 6 and a stop ring 13 mounted between the end of the screw shaft 4 and an abutment 16 on the sleeve 15. On rotation of the shaft 1, the axial movement of the nut 5 on the screw shaft brings the pinion 2 into mesh with an engine member 3 ; the screw shaft then moves to the right in Fig. 1, compressing the spring 7 and closing a gap 12 between end of the screw shaft and the driving head 11, thus establishing and tightening a frictional clutch connection, preferably through a fibre ring 21. The stop ring 13 also comes into frictional engagement with the nut 5 and the convolutions of the spring come into lateral supporting relation for the transmission of the drive. In a modification, the stop ring 13 is threaded on the end of the sleeve 15 and a friction ring of bronze &c. is interposed between the spring 19 and the nut 5. In a further modification, the sleeve 15 is omitted and the screw shaft 4, driving head 11 and stop ring 13 are mounted directly on the shaft 1.
