Abstract

522,839. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1938, No. 36922. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1937. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter including a pinion 4 movable into and out of mesh with a member 5 of the engine to be started, the pinion is drivably connected to the starting-motor shaft 2 through a cam connection 17, 18 which causes indexing of the pinion when its longitudinal movement is obstructed and through a friction clutch 8, 16, the cam connection and clutch being rendered effective to transmit cranking torque to the pinion upon rotation of the shaft. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a sleeve 7 splined on the shaft 2 has a clutch flange 8 formed or fixed thereon and is externally threaded to engage a shifting member 14. A flange 9 is rigidly mounted on the pinion 4 and a barrel 11 loosely mounted on the flanges 8, 9 is provided with a thrust collar 12 and lock ring 13 and is rigidly connected to a flange 15 on the member 14. An annular clutch plate 16 is loosely mounted between the flanges 8, 9, and cam elements 17, 18 are provided on the members 9, 16, which are normally held in extended relation by a torsion spring 19. The shifting member 14 is actuated by a fork 27 connected by a link 31 to the plunger 29 of a solenoid 28, which may also close a switch for the starting motor when the pinion 4 is in mesh with the engine member 5. The initial rotation of the motor causes the sleeve 7 to thread itself forward in the member 14, compressing the cam connection 17, 18 and building up pressure in the clutch 8, 16. If the pinion teeth clash with those of the member 5, continued axial movement of the member 16 causes the pinion to be turned into meshing position by the action of the inclined surfaces 23, 24. When the engine starts, the clutch pressure is relieved by the threaded connection. A modification is described in which the meshing movement of the starter pinion is towards the starting motor and is effected by a lever actuated through a cable actuated manually or by electric or mechanical means ; a light friction spring coiled on one of the friction-clutch members ensures the initial engagement of these members.
