Abstract

442,006. Pistons and connecting-rods. CLERK, R. C., 60, King Street, Kingston, Jamaica, and BEST, D. M. C., 35, Scotts Lane, Shortlands, Kent. July 18, 1934, No. 21043. [Class 122 (i)] The connecting-rod 1 has a hollow, hemispherical cap 3 which works between two concentric hemispherical bearings 8, 10 arranged in the piston between a detachable head or crown 5 which secures the bearings in position and the trunk 7 thereof. The connecting-rod 1 has a central base 2 through which oil is supplied to lubricate the bearing and cool the head of the piston. The spherical bearing member 8 preferably divided is supported by a shoulder 7 on the piston and engages the exterior surface of the cap 3. The bearing member 10, has a flange 9 by which it is supported on the member 8. The crown 5 has a number of radial vanes 11 to conduct heat away. Oil supplied to the bore 2 passes through a port 13, passage 14 and recesses 15 to the bearing. Helical grooves 17 are provided on the surface 8, and similar grooves 18 may be provided on the surface 10. The piston crown may include the entire piston head and may extend down to or carry the piston rings. The skirt and crown may be of aluminium alloy, the bearing members 8, 10 may be of bronze, and the cup 3 may be of steel.
