Abstract
441,718. Universal joints. STUBER, B. K., 15499, Lauder Street, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Sept. 24, 1934, No. 27370. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint comprises two main members 2<a>, 14, between which balls 6a and a retainer 7a are arranged. In the form shown, the retainer-engaging surfaces 8, 9 have their centres 10<a>, 11<a> offset so that balls 6a are forced to take up positions in the plane bisecting the angle between the axes of the members 2<a>, 14. In an alternative form (not shown), the grooves 4, 5 in the members 14, 2<a>, instead of having a common centre at 12a, have their centres offset, the members 14, 2<a> bear directly on each other and the retainer becomes a simple pilot spider having a spherical seating in the member 14.
