Abstract

<PICT:0440559/IV/1> Pile fabric or carpet-like material comprising a non-woven felted mass or pad of fibres is printed by first wetting the material with a mordant and thereafter applying locally the colour, without mordant, by printing. The material is preferably steamed between the application of the mordant and the <PICT:0440559/IV/2> printing. In the arrangement shown, the material 3, Fig. 1, is drawn intermittently from a supply roll 4 over a table 2 upon which it is subjected to the successive operations. It passes first beneath devices supplying the mordant, e.g. tartaric, acetic or formic acid, which devices may be spraying nozzles 9, felt-covered blocks or a roller of rubber or other acid-resistant material. Alternatively, it may pass through a bath of mordant. It then passes beneath steaming devices 10 carried by standards 5 reciprocated vertically by cams 6. Each device 10 comprises a block 12, Fig. 3, with passages 13 conducting the steam from a supply pipe 11 to pads 14 of fibrous material enclosed by a pervious covering 15, e.g. of cheese cloth or muslin. The steam supply valve 16 is preferably operated in synchronism with the standards 5 so that the steaming is effected when the device 10 is lowered. The material next passes beneath printing heads 7 carried by standards 5 reciprocated vertically by cams 6. The heads 7 are supplied with a dye, effective in an acid medium, e.g. Amaranth, Fuchsine or Acid green, and containing a gum thickening, by inking devices 8 reciprocated longitudinally of the table 2. The material, with or without further mordanting, may then pass beneath additional printing heads 7, similarly operated, beneath steaming devices 10, through a washing pan 19 and beneath steaming devices 10<c> which effect the final drying.
