Sept. 7, 1934, No. 25802. Addition to 424,492. [Class 130] The parent Specification relates to a machine for making cigarettes provided with filter tips in which lengths of tobacco cut from a continuous rod are moved out of alignment therewith and associated with filter tips and carried, in parallel bores in an intermittently rotatable carrier, axially into engagement with means for applying a continuous paper strip to produce a continuous cigarette rod. According to the present invention, comb-like elements engage the tobacco at a number of points and avoid axial compression thereof during its movement into and /or its ejection from the bores in the carrier. The tobacco after being compressed by rollers 6, 6a is fed into one of a series of bores 1a in a sleeve 1 which is rotatably mounted in a casing 2. To avoid axial compression, a comb 7a, which extends into the sleeve 1a enters a slot 1b in the bore to engage the tobacco and move forwardly with it. The comb 7a is carried by a slide 7b which is reciprocated on a pivoted lever 8 and is moved into and out of engagement with the tobacco on orbital paths by a cam 8a. A knife 9 severs the tobacco in the bore which is supplied with a filter tip 10 by a plunger 11a. The bores 1a have a slightly larger diameter than the finished cigarettes and are tapered outwardly and preferably accommodate double length tobacco portions and filter tips. The associated tobacco portions and filter tips are ejected on to the paper strip 13 by comb-like elements 14a on a chain 14 which engage the tobacco through the slots 1b. The chain 14 is carried by sprockets 14b mounted on an oscillatable frame 15 which is raised and lowered by a cam 15a. In modified forms, the filter tips are inserted into the bores before the tobacco, or are supplied behind the lengths of tobacco. The Provisional Specification refers to Specifications 311,827, [Class 130], 427,125, and 432,482.
