[Class 130.] In a continuous-rod apparatus for the manufacture of filter-tip cigarettes, bores or receivers 1<a> in or upon an intermittently movable carrier 1 are brought successively into alignment with and between the outlet from a tobaccorod collector tube 3 and the inlet of a guide tube 4 by which the filling is led into a continuously formed paper tube. Lengths of filter-tip material are inserted in the bores or receivers before the latter come into position between the collector and guide tubes, and intermittent movement of the carrier is effected in timed relation to the rodforming apparatus, so that at each step a length of the continuous tobacco filling is removed and a corresponding length of filter-tip material is inserted. As shown, the carrier is a drum 1 mounted on a spindle 2 parallel to the axis of the tubes 3, 4. The drum is rotated intermittently by means of a rod 6 provided with a member 5 engaging pins 1<b >on the drum and actuated from a cam 7 through a swinging arm 8. After completion of its forward stroke, the rod 6 is turned, to disengage the member 5 from the pins 1<b>, by a cam-actuated slide 9 engaging an arm 6<a> on the rod, which is then returned by a spring 7b. While the drum is stationary, filter tips are inserted in the bores 1<a> from a tip-forming device 10 by a plunger 10<a>. When a bore moves into alignment with the tubes 3, 4, the tip therein is moved forward, with the tobacco rod in front of it, by a picker 15 mounted on a carriage 15<a> sliding on rods 16 and operated by a cam through a rod 15<b>. The rods 16 are carried by members 16b mounted on the upper ends of vertically guided rods 16<c> lifted intermittently by cams 17 acting through bell-crank levers 17<a>. The tobacco which enters the bore 1<a> behind the tip is severed on each side of the drum 1 by reciprocating cutters 13, 13<a> carried by a rod 13b operated by a cam 13<c> through a bell-crank lever 14, or rotary cutters may be employed. The tobacco remaining in the bore 1<a> is subsequently ejected by a plunger 11, or by an air blast or suction, and is discharged into a hopper or duct 12. The continuous filling, consisting of alternate lengths of tobacco and filter tip material, is enclosed in a continuous paper tube formed from a paper strip 18 led over the roller 19, and is cut into cigarettes by a final cut-off device. In place of the rotary drum 1, a reciprocating slide may be employed having two parallel bores or receiving tubes which are alternately in alignment with the tubes 3, 4 and receive lengths of filter-tip material from two separate positions, at which the lengths of tobacco filling carried away from the tobacco rod are also ejected.
