Abstract
440,138. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, and MIDDLETON, P., Osram - G.E.C. Lamp Works, Brook Green, Hammersmith, both in London. Oct. 30, 1934, No. 31143. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge vessel comprises an inner discharge tube 1 supported within an outer envelope 2 by means comprising an elastic spiral of wire or the like, attached to a leading-in wire at one part, and bearing at another part on the outer envelope. The spiral may be plane as at 5, with the outer convolution bearing on the envelope 2, or conical as at 6, with one or more outer convolutions resting on the envelope 2, the remaining convolutions projecting freely within the hemispherical end of the outer envelope and providing longitudinal resilience. A downward extension 9 of the spiral 6 is secured to the leading-in wire 8, and serves both to anchor the tube longitudinally and to conduct current to the upper electrode. Two glass tubes slipped over the lead 8 insulate it from the spiral 5, the lower tube 10 also serving partly to anchor the spiral 5, the outer end of which is welded to the lead 7.
