[Class 136 (ii)] In a cycle hub of the type adapted to be converted from a free-wheel to a fixed-wheel drive, free-wheel mechanism of the ratchet type is mounted in an end enlargement of the hub, and a pawl-carrying element of the freewheel mechanism is adapted to be connected non-rotatably by a slidable dog with a ring or collar in the hub enlargement, so as to convert the hub from the freewheel to the fixed wheel drive. The hub shell 1 has at one end an enlargement into which projects a sleeve 2 carrying the sprocket wheel 1<a> and having a reduced part 2<a> upon which slides non-rotatably a combined pawl-carrying and locking member 3, which when moved to the left engages non-rotatably (by flats 3<b>, Fig. 2) with a ring 5 on the hub, so as to connect the latter positively to the sprocket 1<a> for the fixedwheel drive. Spring-loaded pawls 6, Figs. 2 and 3, mounted in recesses 3<c> in the member 3, engage ratchet teeth 4 in the hub enlargement to provide the freewheel drive when the member 3 is moved to the right. The hub 1 and sleeve 2 are mounted on a hollow spindle 7 by ball bearings as shown. The sliding movement of the member 3 is effected from a hand control by means of a rod 8 sliding in the spindle 7 under the control of compression springs 14, 16. Abutments 9, Fig. 3, on the rod 8, slide axially in slots in the spindle 7, and engage a flat plate 10, which passes through and slides in slots 10<a>, Fig. 1, in the sleeve 2 and engages at its ends in slots 11, Fig. 2, in the member 3. In a modification, the sliding member or dog adapted to effect the fixed-wheel drive is mounted within a bore in the driving-sleeve 2, which carries the free-wheel pawls on its outer periphery.
