Abstract

439,645. Vehicle opening-tops. PETTERS, Ltd., and DAVENPORT, A., Westland Aircraft Works, Yeovil, Somerset. June 27, 1934, No. 19028. [Class 108 (i)] [See also Group XXXIII] Windshielding means for a cockpit or equivalent space in a vehicle or aircraft comprises a rigid, sliding preferably transparent roof member carried in fixed guide surfaces above and below the member, the guide surfaces being disposed wholly outside the cockpit so that the roof member is retained and forms a cantilever structure in any partially open position. Fig. 3 shows an aeroplane cockpit in which the doors and transparent sliding roof e are fully open. Rollers on the roof engage guides d disposed entirely to the rear of the cockpit on a transparent fairing c. When closed the roof is supported by dowel pins g &c. engaging the fixed unsplinterable windscreen a, b and at its sides may engage additional guides m on the tops of the doors. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to a motorcar, the sliding roof e being carried in fixed guides.d at the rear of the doors and in guides o in a backbone p extending to the windscreen frame q. Additional guides r are provided on the doors. The invention may be employed in conjunction with the shielding devices described in Specification 412,717, by lengthening the fixed part of the hood between the cockpits described in that Specification and by replacing the pilot's cover by a roof adapted to slide rearwardly over the fixed part of the hood. Specification 332,854, [Class 108 (i)], also is referred to.
