Abstract
439,628. Hydraulic transmission of power. FOTTINGER, H., 171, Berlinerstrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin. April 6, 1934, No. 10528. Convention date, April 6, 1933. [Class 69 (ii)] A torque converter employs turbines of which the entry-radius is less than the exitradius or such turbines together with axialflow turbines, the turbine blades having a thickened entry, and the angle with respect to the periphery at the exit being small, so that the relative exit-velocity and peripheral velocity are approximately the same at normal turbine speed. A simple form has pump blades 2, Fig. 3, turbine blades 3 and guide blades at 4 or 4<1>. The guide blades may be axially movable and a mechanical clutch provided. In another form the axially movable guide device has two sets of blades 4<a>, 4b, Fig. 4, and may be held fixed or allowed to rotate, and a mechanical clutch, 18, 19, is provided. The turbine device may also have two sets of blades used alternatively. The turbine and guide blades may also be divided into fixed outlet portions 31, Figs. 7 and 8, and inlet portions 36 which are moved into the circuit for small speeds. If desired the inlet portions may be at some distance from the outlet portions. The portions 36 may be substituted by smaller portions 37, movable into the circuit and overlapping the portions 31. The exits of the guide blades may be such as to impart a whirl to the liquid before entry into the pump so that pump blades having an approximately radial entry may be employed. When it is desired to brake the driven shaft, the guide devices are held fast or introduced into the circuit, and the effects may be increased by throttling the circuit and braking the primary shaft. Specification 280,889, [Class 69 (ii)], is referred to.
