Abstract

439,039. Printing - machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Crafts, C. S.; 645, North Lombard Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A.) May 25, 1934, No. 15679. Convention date, June 19, 1933. [Class 100 (i)] [See also Group VIII] Cutting-apparatus folding paper.-Mechanism for cutting a printed paper web into sheets comprises a pair of rotary cylinders each carrying a shear cutter-blade, and so arranged that the cutting edges travel at speeds in excess of the web speed, and differing slightly from each other. The cylinders are formed with solid cores 15, 33, Fig. 1, rotated at equal angular speeds by intermeshing gears 31 at both ends, and are slightly inclined with reference to a line perpendicular to the line of feed. Integral lugs 16 on the core 15 carry the leading cutters 17 and are so shaped that when the cutters are secured by bolts 19, they assume a helical shape. The inner edges of the cutters abut against studs 22 screwed into the core and by the adjustment of which the outer edges of the cutters are caused to lie on a cylindrical surface. Discs of the diameter of this surface are formed on the ends of the cores so that straight edges can be placed thereon to form gauges for setting the blades. The following blades 30 are similarly attached to the core 33 except for the difference that the securing bolts 35 are adjustably secured to the lugs 32 by lock-nuts 391 and the blades are secured between collars 381 on the bolts and nuts 34. The coacting blade faces are curved so that the curves are a continuation one of the other. Also, the edges of the blades 17, 30 lie respectively just outside the pitch circle and on the pitch circle of the gears 31, which are arranged so that their speeds are slightly greater than the web speeds. Thus the blades move away from each other and from the cut edge of the web after the severing operation. Semi-cylindrical shells 25, 41 are secured to the cores 15, 33 respectively by bolts 26, 42, and their radius is such that their surface speed is that of the web. The cut sheets S are taken from the cutters at a speed greater than that of the cutters, and for this purpose the surface of the succeeding folding- cylinder 45, Fig. 8, between the grippers 47 and a corresponding folding blade 46 is formed of gradually increasing radius.
