Abstract

438,930. Stuffing - boxes. BARRY, P., 296, Frankenstrasse, Essen, Germany. March 14, 1935, No. 7906. [Class 122 (v)] A stuffing-box packing chamber 15 is sealed against cylinder pressure by constructing the end wall in two parts 9, 10, the former being clamped in position and the latter carried by a diaphragm pressed axially by a spring 13 and cylinder pressure whereby the part 10 is pressed into sealing engagement with the part 9 and the packing-rings. A segmental ring 18 retained by a spring ring 16 may be interposed between the wall 10 and rings 2. The latter are held in contact with the shaft by balls 7 in a cage 6, pressed axially by springs 5 into contact with an inclined surface on a pressure ring 1. Any pressure which accumulates in the chamber 15 escapes through a spiral channel 21 in the end wall of the chamber and assists in counterbalancing the axial cylinder pressure.
