[Class 117] In the separation of coal, ores, &c., into constituents of different densities by causing the materials to pass over an inclined perforated table through which air under pressure is supplied, the stream of material and the air-currents passing transversely therethrough are subjected to alternating constrictions and expansions, the degree of which is preferably adjustable. The apparatus for carrying the invention into effect comprises an inclined perforated table 1, Fig. 1, with an air supply chamber 2 underneath and side walls 3 forming a trough for the material under treatment which is fed from a hopper 6 with an adjustable gate 7. The space above the table is subdivided by bars 4 arranged in break-joint order, as shown in Fig. 2, and inclined to the surface of the table. Preferably the bars are of stream-line shape, and to allow for adjustment of inclination are hingedly attached to the table at their lower ends and supported by adjustable supports 5 at their upper ends. The width of the bars may also be adjusted by making them of two hinged parts 4<a>, 4b, as shown in Fig. 4. When the bars are hollow they may be supplied with air under pressure, and have nozzles in their lower sides for injecting air into the bed of material. The discharge shelf 12 and the cut-out plate 13 for separating the stratified layers of material are made extensible and dampers 9, 11 are provided in the air chamber to control the air supply to the parts of the table under the feed hopper and at the discharge end.
