Abstract

299,777. Fraser, T. Oct. 31, 1927, [Convention date]. Pneumatic separating.-In the separation of two mixed materials of different densities, the materials are introduced into a mass of dry granular material to which has been imparted fluid properties by the upward pressure of air, and to which is also imparted a transitional movement by which the separated elements of the charge are carried to delivery points. The apparatus for carrying out the separation com prises a chamber 1 with two compartments 1<a>, 1<b>, each with a pervious bottom 2, 2a and communicating with a fan 3 by passages 4, 5. The chamber is supplied with granular material S. such as sand from a bin B by way of a shoot 6 and opening 7 or by a shoot 16 or by both. The action of the air from the fan passing up through the sand is stated to impart to it the properties of a fluid so that under the head of sand in the bin B it will flow carrying with it the lighter products of the mixture M supplied from the hopper 10 into the shoot 9 and allowing the heavier products to gravitate to the bottom of the chamber and the shoot 11. The discharge from the shoot 11 is controlled by a reciprocating feed plate F, and the sand is separated from the products by sieves 12, 13 and returned to the bin B.
