436,873. Testing surface textures. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. April 19, 1934, No. 11849. Convention date, April 19, 1933. [Class 97 (i)] In order to test a protective coating for flaws, there is applied to the coating a covering of a solution of a chemical compound capable of yielding a colour or a colour change with another chemical compound, the solution being removed after some time and the coating then being covered with a solution of a chemical compound capable of yielding a colour or a colour change with the first compound, so that flaws in the coating acquire the said colour or undergo the said colour change. In a specific example described for testing a homogeneously leaded object, the surface is painted with sulphuric acid which is washed off after about two hours with a water jet. After drying, the surface is painted with a Congo-red solution to which glue is added, or with a titanium white suspension coloured with Congo-red. After a short time flawed places show a blue colouration. The Congored may be replaced by other dyestuffs which are not fast to acid.
