Abstract

833,884. Magnetic tests. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 31, 1958 [July 31, 1957], No. 24279/57. Class 37. During crack testing by means of magnetic oxide powder which may be suspended in white spirits or paraffin, to render the oxide clearly visible against a dull surface, the surface is first covered with a film of non-metallic material of a colour contrasting with that of the oxide. The film is preferably light in colour and lightreflecting ; a copolymer of polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl chloride in solution in ketone and hydrocarbon solvents together with some mineral acid is suggested. To this solution may be added titanium oxide to form a white lightreflecting film. Another suitable material is cellulose acetate butyrate incorporating titanium oxide. The film may be applied by brush, spray or aerosol.
