Abstract

494,424. Indica.ting-devices on motor vehicles. CHAMPION, C. H., and COOMBS, F. E. April 29, 1937, No. 12222. [Class 79 (v)] The approach of a motor vehicle to a kerb is indicated to the driver by a device mounted on the vehicle and adapted to control signalling means by its engagement with the kerb. In the Figure, the device comprises a series of flexible metal contact strips 3, 4 and 5 of progressively diminishing length depending from an end of the vehicle bumper 1. As the vehicle draws in to the kerb, strip 3 is bent inwardly by engage ment with the kerb, and electric circuits are completec successively between strips 3 and 4, and strips 4 and 5 The two circuits may operate separate signalling devices, e.g. the first visual and the second audible; or the second circuit may serve to intensify the first signal. The device may be mounted on a pivoted arm by which it can be brought into operative position only when desired, e.g. in a fog. It may also be mounted on a transverse pivot 9 to enable it to ride over obstructions in the road. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 2 (not shown), the strips 3, 4, and 5 are replaced by concentric flexible tubes operating in the same manner. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), a single pivoted rod is employed, engagement of its lower end with the kerb causing it to swing inwardly, and, through a mechanical or hydraulic connection, displace a contact arm over a series of fixed contacts.
