[Class 7 (ii)] In a driving cam 1 for an internal-combustion engine, the curve forming the power slope is a portion of a cardioid. The curve is formed by tangents to the circles traced with the radius of the driving roller on a portion of a cardiod corresponding to the formula p = b (1- cos #), where b = length of the piston stroke + diameter of the roller. As shown, the pistonrod 3 is slotted at 4 for the passage of the cam-shaft 2 and is provided with a driving roller 5 and a guide roller 6. A lateral projection 11 on the cam 1 is engaged during the suction stroke by the upper surface of an integral arm 9 on the piston rod, and during the compression and exhaust by the lower surface of an integral arm 10.
