Abstract

435,210. Extruding clay &c. FARMER, A., and FARMER, B. A., East View, Castle Gresley, near Burton-on-Trent. April 30, 1934, No. 12937. [Class 87 (ii)] A sanitary-pipe-making machine or pug mill having a revolving shaft 4 fitted with knives 8 and a worm 10 to work the clay &c., and convey it to a de-airing chamber 2, and, on the same or another shaft, knives 9 and a worm 11 to disintegrate the clay and carry it to the outlet, is provided with a partition 13 in the form of a wheel divided concentrically at 13a and having spokes 13b to form apertures through which the clay is forced into the chamber 2 thus forming an air seal. In a vertical pipe-making machine, Fig. 1, the clay is supplied from a hopper through an opening 5 and is advanced by the worm 10 through a frusto-conical housing 12 situated within the chamber 2. The partition 13 is attached to the lower end of the housing and is provided with a bush 14 having packing at one end to form a substantial bearing for the shaft 4 and an additional air seal. A second partition 7 is provided at the outlet end which may have additional knives 16. The extruded pipe is received on a counterweighted table T. The chamber 2 is evacuated by a pump through a pipe 17. In the pug mill, Fig. 4, the housing 12 is inserted between the inlet section 1 and the chamber 2, and the outlet 3 has a renewable lining 19. The pug mill may be used as a feed device for a vertical pipe machine and the chamber 2 may have a lid to which the pipe 17 is attached.
