Abstract

<PICT:0435134/III/1> <PICT:0435134/III/2> <PICT:0435134/III/3> Towers for the concentration of liquids by evaporation or absorption contain a number of transverse members each having one or more openings 11 provided with orifices or notches 15. The liquid to be concentrated is fed on to the top member through openings 5 and 6 and then flows through the orifices 15 and falls in the form of an annular curtain of liquid on the member below, passing in a similar manner from member to member to the bottom of the tower. Hot gases admitted through pipes 10 and 10<a> pass up the tower through the apertures 11 and are forced to pass in succession through the curtains of liquid. The hot gases may alternatively pass down the tower and may be generated by burners in the tower. The latter may be built up from the members as shown or alternatively the members may be secured in a tower already constructed. The liquid from orifices 15 may fall on intermediate members 13 and flow over the outer edges of these on to the apertured members below. Projections 16 may be provided beneath the orifices 15 to prevent the liquid streams forming the annular curtain from coalescing.
