434,568. Universal joints. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Thompson Products, Inc. ; 7781, Conant Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Oct. 1, 1934, No. 28085. [Class 65 (ii)] In a universal joint for link work comprising a stud, a housing, and a resilient bushing arranged under radial compression between the stud and the inside of the housing, the bushing is initially thicker at the middle than at the ends and is deformed in assembly into a substantially cylindrical shape of uniform wall thickness ; the ends of the bushing are therefore less compressed than the middle, facilitating universal movement of the stud in the housing. In the form shown, the stud 22, with a tapered portion for insertion into a corresponding bore in a crank arm or link, has a cylindrical surface bearing in a pair of semicircular members 23 provided with radial flanges at each vertical edge and with a flared flange at the lower end, the rubber bushing 25 being compressed between these members 23 and the housing 9. The lower end of the housing is closed by a resilient washer 31 which is held in place by a dished plate 32 secured by a button on the end of the stud 22. The upper end of the housing is closed by a washer 36 pressed by a spring 39 which bears against the member carrying the stud 23. The bushing preferably has a cylindrical external surface initially, with a wall of D- section, the curved surface facing the axis. The housing 9 has a spigot for screwing and clamping into the end of a rod 13.
