Abstract

An indicating device such as an aircraft compass indicator or other instrument, comprises a pivot consisting mainly of tantalum and having a nitrogenized surface. The tantalum may be alloyed with 7 1/2 per cent of tungsten. A process for the manufacture of pivots comprises drawing wire to the desired thickness, cutting it into lengths which are then shaped, and subjecting these lengths in an open nickel boat to an atmosphere of nitrogen while in a furnace heated to 500 DEG C. for 20 to 30 minutes. Different temperatures and times may be employed. Atomic nitrogen from the dissociation of ammonia gas may, alternatively, be employed in the nitrogenization process. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 3691/05, [Class 12].
