Abstract

433,526. Steam turbines. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 11, 1935, No. 11267. Convention date, April 12, 1934. [Class 110 (iii)] Relates to turbines in which regulation is effected by varying the number of active nozzles. Three individual nozzles 11, 12, 13 controlled by valves 20, 21, 22, and three groups 14, 15, 16 comprising four nozzles each controlled by valves 23, 24, 25, are provided. The valves are opened and closed by cams 47 .. 50 on a shaft 46 which is turned by a governor-influenced servo system 31, 32. The first three valves have stems of different length and are actuated by the cam 47 through a common crossbar 56, but they may be actuated by separate cams. In operation the valves 20, 21, 22 first open consecutively; upon increased demand for steam the valve 23 opens and the valves 22, 21, 20 close consecutively ; upon further demand these latter valves again open, but they close again when the valve 24 opens, and so on. Rotation of the shaft 46 is limited by stops 82, 83 in the servo-motor.
