Abstract

Black oxide of iron is obtained from precipita<PICT:0433333/III/1> ted ferrous compounds by oxidation with air or other oxygen - containing gas at elevated temperatures, say from 220--300 DEG F., and at pressures above about 40 lbs. per sq. in. and up to say 100 lbs. per sq.in. The precipitate may be obtained by treating ferrous sulphate or chloride with an alkali carbonate or hydroxide, preferably in excess, and precipitation may be effected at temperatures of 125--200 DEG F. Precipitation and oxidation may take place in a steam - jacketed autoclave 10 provided with inlets 11--13 for the reactants and an outlet tube 22. Turbine wheels 17, 18 mounted on a rotating shaft 14 serve to draw slurry towards the axis of the autoclave and force it out from the periphery of the wheels, vanes 19, 21 being fitted to minimize swirling and cause vertical movement of the slurry. Air is supplied through a pipe 27 to a perforated annular conduit 28 situated above the wheel 18.
