[Class 132 (iii)] [See also Groups XX and XVIII] The effect of movement is produced in pictorial effects by relative movement between the picture and a background sheet having continuous or discontinuous optical lines thereon. Figs. 1 and 2 show a front sheet 7, having a picture thereon, in which apertures 8, 10, 11, are cut. A fixed sheet 6, behind the sheet 7, has a portion of the picture thereon which is visible through the aperture 8, and openings which register with the apertures 10, 11. A disc 4, rotatable on a pivot 3, carries a representation of a motor car which is visible in front of the sheet 6, while traversing the aperture 8, the lower half of each wheel being cut away, and holes 18, 19 being formed in the positions of the rear and front lamps. Apertures are also formed in the disc 4 in such positions that they register with the apertures 10, 11 for a short time during the rotation of the disc A fixed background sheet 2 has openings registering with the apertures 10, 11, the lines radiating from the pivot 3, and visible through the cutaway parts of the wheels, to represent spokes. Lamps and coloured material may be provided in connection with the apertures, and rotation of the disc produces the effect of a lighted car approaching through a hidden road, passing into an open space, and continuing along a hidden road. The disc may also serve as a crank operating other movable parts to produce further effects. Constructions are described in which vehicles, optical lines, &c., are carried by stationary screens and by one or more endless bands moving on rollers to co-operate and produce effects of movement, change of lighting in traffic signals, &c. Fig 8 shows a flat or curved stationary screen 43 carrying any desired picture provided with one or more slots 45 through which are visible optical lines 44 on a cylinder 42 secured to a fan 46 rotated by rising air from a lamp 47. Two or more cylinders rotating on the same axis at different speeds or in different directions may be used. The optical lines may be arranged and coloured in any desired manner.
