To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ERIK An'rur. Facun- LUND, a subjectof the King of Sweden, residing at Stocksund, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a light sign, by which it is possible to perform a movable light impression effective for advertising purposes.
The moving action of light aimed at is obtained according to the invention by the co-operating of a screen having translucent advertising signs and a system of bunches or sectors of light movable with relation to the screen, the advertising signs having such form that an imaginative movement is added to the continuous movement of the light sectors. Preferably, the advertising signs may have a sinuous form, so that when illuminated by thelight sectors movable with relation to the sings a sinuous movement will be obtained. Y
rl`he invention will be more lclearly described with relation to the annexed drawings, showing twee forms of embodiment of an apparatus according to the same. "Fig, 1 is a cross-section of an apparatus according to the one form of embodiment; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof; Fig. 3 is a front view of the apparatus according to the other form of embodiment, and Fig. 4 is a crosssection thereof.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 designates a closed casing, preferably of wood, to the fore wall of which is secured a circular glassplate 2, forming a stationary screen. Applied to the inside of said plate 2 is an opaque cover 3, for instance of tin-foil, provided with a central circular aperture 4 and a sinuous aperture 5 having the form of a band running from said central aperture 4 and terminating in the word Ajax, which is also translucent. Applied to the glassplate 2 within the central aperture 4 of the cover 3 is animage of a bottle 6, the neck of which is directed towards the sinuous aperture 5. Located within the casing 1 and immediately behind the partly translucent wall 2 is a rotary screen 7 resting be tween rollers S secured to the fore wall of the casing and supported sideways by pins 9 secured to the top and the bottom, respectively, of the casing, one of said rollers S serving also as a driving roller for the rotary screen'7 and being connected for that `purpose with a small electric -motor10 by means of a beltdrive 11. Located at the rear wall of the casing 1 and surrounded by a reflector 12 is anelectric lampl y13 throwing its light upon the rotaryscreen 7, which has anopaquepart 14 and atranslucent part 15.
Supposing the rotary screen 7 to take up the position shown in Figs. land 2, all that will be visible as illuminated, when looking at the front side of the casing, is the central aperture 4 with the bottle 6. If then the screen 7 be rotated, thesinuous aperture 5 will be successively uncovered by the part 14 of the screen and illuminated through the translucent part 15of the screen, and then also the advertising text will `be illuminated. On further rotation ofI "the screen 7 the sinuous aperture 5 will successively be covered by the opaque part `14 of the screen, and, finally, the whole aperture 5 and also the text will be covered by said part 14. Thus, when rotating the screen 7 the aperture 45 willbe successively covered and uncovered, i. e. successively illuminated by and covered with relation to the light 13, with the effect that, due to thesinuous form o f the aperture 5, a seeming or imaginative sinuous movement of the light band 5 will occur.
In the form of embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, 1 designates the wooden casing, 2 its front wall of glass, 3 the tin-foil cover at the back of said glass-plate 2, and
14 and a translucent part 15. The said latter part may consist of a number of glass-sectors, as apparent from Fig. 3, having different colours, and, if desired, said translucent sectors may be separated by opaque sectors. Provided in the tin-foil 3 of the plate 2 is a circular sinuous aperture 16 forming a closed band concentric with the axis of rotation of the screen 7. The rotary screen 7 is secured to a shaft 17 mounted in bearings 18 and is rotated by an electric motor 19 by means of a worm gearing 20. Secured to the fore bearing 18 is an insulating disk 21 carrying four electric lamps 22 surrounded by an annular reflector 23 The light from the lamps 22 is projected on the rotary screen 7 by means of said projector`23. Obviously, the stationary plate 2 may also in this case be 7 the rotary screen having an opaque part provided With any desired advertising text located insideor outside the sinuous aperture 16.
The illuminated part of the aperture 16 in the cover 3 Will, obviously, appear as a band comprising differently coloured parts formed by the visible parts of the dierently coloured sectors 15. Due to the rotation of the screen 7 the illuminated band will describe a continuous circular movement about thel centre of rotation of the screen 7 and, due to the sinuous form of the stationary aperture 16 said movement Will appear as a serpent-like sinuousmovement, an imaginative radial movement being added to the circular motion of the bunches of light produced by the rotary screen 7.
Vvfhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is:-
1. In a light sign, the combination With a stationary screen having translucent advertising signs, of a source of light, and a rotary disk located at the one side of said stationary screen and having a continuous translucent part anda continuous opaque part, said parts having the. form of two complementary sectors, so as to alternately uncover and cover, When rotated, said translucent advertising signs, said signs having the form of a sinuous band. .Y
2. In a light sign, the combination with a stationary screen having translucent advertising signs, lof a source of light, and a rotary disk located at the one side of said stationary screen and having a continuous translucent part and a continuous opaque part,
said parts having the form of tvvo complementary sectors, so as to alternately uncover and cover, when rotated, said translucent advertising signs, said signs having the form of a continuous sinuous band concentric With the axis of rotation of said rotary disk.
3. In a light sign, the combination with a stationary screen having translucent advertising signs, of a source of light, and a rotary disk located at the one side of said stationary screen and having a continuous translucent part and a continuous opaque part, said parts having the form ot' tWo complementary sectors, so as to alternately uncover and cover, when rotated, said translucent advertising signs, the translucent sector of said rotary disk comprising a plurality otl smaller differently coloured sectors, and said translucent signs having the form of a sinuous band.
4. In a light sign, the combination With a stationary screen having translucent advertising signs, of a source of light, and a rotary disk located at the one side of said stationary screen and having a continuous translucent part and a continuous opaque part, said parts having the form of two complementary sectors, so as to alternately uncover and cover, when rotated, said trans lucent advertising signs, the translucent sector of said rotary disk comprising a plurality of smaller Vdifferently coloured sectors, and said translucent signs having the form of a continuous sinuous band concentric With the axis of rotation of said rotary disk.
