Abstract
The nicotine content of tobacco, whether in leaf or cut form, or in cigarettes or cigars, and also whether packaged or not, is reduced, and the quality improved, by subjecting it to the action of ethylene oxide in the presence of at least 8 per cent of moisture. The ethylene oxide is preferably used in gaseous form, to the action of which the tobacco is subjected in an evacuated chamber. The extent to which the nicotine is reduced may be varied by altering the concentration of the ethylene oxide gas, the duration of exposure thereto, the quantity of the charge of tobacco treated, and the moisture content. Also the effect of the ethylene oxide gas may be reduced by the addition of carbon dioxide or air. Homologues or derivatives of ethylene oxide may be used, e.g. propylene oxide. Also solutions in water may be used instead of gas. The process reduces the acidity of the tobacco.
