Abstract

Pyrene is sulphonated in presence of a diluent such as nitrobenzene, with a compound containing the group <FORM:0431105/IV/1> obtainable by the action of halogen sulphonic acid on a tertiary base such as pyridine, quinoline, a dialkylaniline or a trialkylamine, the said sulphonating agent being either prepared in situ or used after isolation. The pyrene monosulphonic acid produced may be converted by alkaline fusion into an oxypyrene. The products are intermediates for dyes and pharmaceutical products. According to examples, pyrene is sulphonated with the product obtained by treating pyridine with chlorosulphonic acid in situ, or by treating quinoline, dimethylaniline, or trimethylamine with chlorosulphonic, and with or without nitrobenzene as diluent, the sulphonic acid obtained is extracted with alkali and isolated; it may be converted into a hydroxy compound by fusion with caustic potash. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the sulphonation of pyrene under mild conditions generally and contains a further example of the sulphonation with chlorsulphonic acid in carbontetrachloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
