Abstract

430,419. Applying capsules &c. CHORLTON, F. O. L., Riverside Works, Bury. Dec. 14, 1933, No. 35163. [Class 125 (ii)] [See also Group XXII] A machine for sealing bottles, jars, &c. by means of a cork cap, or like stopper, comprising an axially movable table on which they are held in correct relation to the sealing mechanism and to which they may be fed by automatic means, has two or more centring devices symmetrically disposed on the table which are moved radially to centre and hold the container by axial movement of the table relatively to an actuating part. The invention is described with reference to a seaming-machine and the apparatus comprises a shaft D carrying cams for operating the parts of the machine as in Specification 430,418, [Group XXII]. The seaming-tools c5 are moved radially during seaming by a cam c41 reciprocated by a cam c1 and lever c11. The table P supporting the container J is raised to seaming position by a cam p1 through a rod p3 and a bell-crank lever p6, p8 engaging the hollow shank p12 of the table. A member t1, carrying circular rack teeth t15 engaging toothed portions t16 of centring devices T, is moved upwardly by frictional engagement with the sleeve p12, but the movement is partly restrained by a spring t13, the relative motion causing the devices T to swing into engagement with the container due to the engagement of the teeth t15, t16. In a modification an adjustable friction bearing replaces the spring t13. In a further modification, movement of the table relatively to a sleeve t32, Fig. 5, moves centring devices T2 inwardly through levers t34, the devices being applied to non-circular cans. A pin and slot connection may replace the levers t34. Specification 430,420 also is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the actuating part may be moved positively in the axial direction relatively to the table to actuate the centring devices.
