[Class 131] A hair-waving appliance comprises a protector clamp, a hollow curling rod co - operating therewith, and an electric heater adapted to be inserted into the bore of the curling rod from either end thereof. The clamp comprises a base portion 16, Fig. 2, to which is hinged a rubber-covered rod 17 carrying a locking lever 18 provided with a handle 19. The curler comprises a hollow waisted tube 23 provided with a hinged finger to grip the end of the tress, and formed at one end with a reduced portion 26 about which is coiled a spring 27 the convolutions of which terminate in a U-shaped bend 28. The curler is held in position on the clamp by engaging the bend 28 beneath a hook 22 carried by the base 16, the other end of the curler bearing against a pin 21. The spring 27 allows rotating of the curler in one direction only relative to the clamp, and the bore of the curler adjacent the pin 21 is provided with broached corners adapted to be engaged by the square end of an operating key. The heater comprises an outer tube 33, Fig. 10, of heat-conducting material, e.g. metal, provided with a handle 36 of heat insulating material and containing a rod 43 of refractory material, e.g. lava, provided with two parallel bores, 41, 42 containing coiled resistance elements 40. The elements 40 are attached at one end to the leads 38, 39 and are joined together at the other end, e.g. by twisting, the join being covered by a seal 44. The end 34 of the tube 33 is expanded to frictionally engage the bore of the curling rod.
