The primary object of this invention is' to profils videa device 01 this type wherein the rod is pivotally connected tothe hair clamp thereby to enable the rod to be disposed at an incline to the clamp during winding of the hair thereon so as tofacilitate the Winding operation, enabling same to be eifected more easily and quickly and further to effect automatic movement of the rod to a position at substantiallyy right angles to the clamp by the actof windingv the hair on the rod.

The rod is preferably formed with spiral-like grooves 10 to provide a grip for the hair during Wrapping on the rod, the hair being held in position by a coil spring 11 which is slidable on the rod and is providedwith a finger grip 12. The rod is preferably divided as indicated at 13 andhas a connection, similar to that of the swivel connection in Fig-3 to facilitate wrapping of the hair on the rod.`

As shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the member 1 is of substantially U-shape and has its free ends formed with upper and lower spaced arms 14 and 15. A jaw 16 of U-shape in cross section is pivoted at l'between the arms 14 and at its free end has a ringer grip 18. The jaw is formed of spring metal and is provided with a knob 19 affording a latch which isadapted to be sprung into any one of three or more openings 20 carried by the upper of the arms 15 whereby to latch the jaw in hair clamping position, It will be noted that by the provision of three keepers 19 the latch may be sprung into any one thereof to clamp the hair in position, depending upon the amount of hair which is to be engaged bythe clamp. The jaw 16has a preferably rubber member 21 secured therein and which `confronts a similar rubber` member 22 that .is held at its ends between the respective arms 14 and 15 as shown in Fig. 1. In this form of the invention the clamping member 1 is in all respects similar to the clamping member depicted in Figs. 1 to 5 having the seat 24' and foot 25', but with the exception that a pair of spaced ears 29 project into the drip cup 2 in spaced relation to the bottom thereof and receive in the space between the ears the shank portions 30 of a bifurcated head member 31, the Shanks being carried by a member 32 to which the rod 33 is swivelled similar to the swivel as indicated in Fig. 4. With this construction it will be observed that the rod is readily attachable to and detachable from the drip cup or pan. In this form of the invention a jaw or clamp 34 is pivoted at 35 to the rod 33 and at the inception of the waving operation the rod 33 is removed from the clamp and the latter is then applied in position on the head of the wearer, following which, with the rod removed the hair is rst clamped against the rod by the clamp 34 and is then twisted, and upon completion of the twisting operation the rod is applied to the clamp l by bringing the Shanks 30 of the member 32 into registry with the ears 29, whereupon the parts are slid into the position of Figs. 6, 7, and 8.

In Fig. 9 is illustrated a wrapper which is similar to that disclosed in my Patent 1,657,029, December 5, 1927, with the exception that the same is provided with a preferably flannel or other vabsorbent strip 37 at its lower edge which strip as depicted in Fig. 1 of the drawings when the pad is in position projects in the drip cup and acts .to absorb any products of condensation which may collect therein.

This wrapper is for use with both forms of the invention.

What is claimed, is:

1. In combination with a clamp for holding the hair to be curled adjacent the scalp, a rod piv-otally and turnably connected to the clamp, and means for holding the hair wrapped about the rod and with the latter initially at an incline to the clamp whereby upon turning of the rod the hair wrapped on the rod will pull against the portion thereof held by the clamp so as to effect movement of the rod to a position at substantially right angles to the clamp.

2. In a hair curler or Waver, a clamp having hair gripping parts and having a drip cup provided with liquid sealed bottom and sides formed on its outer face, a hair engaging rod connected to the clamp and a protecting member for the *i hair on the rod having an absorbent portion projecting in the drip cup.

3. In a hair curler or waver for use with a protecting member for the hair having an absorbent portion, a hair clamp having a drip cup provided with liquid sealed bottom and sides, and

clamp and for receiving the protecting member over the hair wound on the rod and with the absorbent portion of the member extending into the drip cup.

4. In combination with a clamp for holding the hair to be curled adjacent the scalp, a hair engaging rod associated with the clamp, means for holding the hair wrapped on the rod and with the latter initially at an incline to the clamp and means whereby to cause the rod upon twisting of the hair thereon to pull against the portion held by the clamp so as to effect movement of the rod to a position at substantially right angles to the Y, clamp.

5. In a hair waver or curler, a scalp protecting member having a part to receive therethrough the hair to be curled, a clamp having portions engageable with the member to hold the latter spaced from said member thereby to aord a Ventilating passage, and a hair engaging rod carried by the clamp, said portions comprising an elongated part and a foot both of which parts seat against said member.

6. In a hair curler or waver, a clamp having a drip cup formed on its outer face provided with liquid sealed bottom and sides, a hair engaging rod removably connected to the clamp, a pivoted jaw carried by the rod to hold the hair thereon, and a protecting member for the hair on the rod having an absorbent portion projecting in the drip cup.

'7. In a hair curler or waver for use with a protecting member for the hair having an absorbent portion, a hair clamp having hair gripping portions and having a drip cup having permanently closed sides and bottom, a hair engaging rod having a pivoted jaw and having a removable connection with the clamp and for receiving the protecting member over the jaw and over the hair wound on the rod and with the absorbent portion of the member extending into the drip cup.

8. In combination with a clamp for holding the hair to be curled adjacent the scalp, a rod movably connected to the clamp, means for holding the hair wrapped about the rod and with the latter initially at an incline to the clamp, and means whereby upon winding of the hair wrapped on the rod the hair will pull against the portion thereof held by the clamp so as to effect movement of the rod to a position at substantially right angles to the clamp.

9. In a hair waver or curler, a clamp for holding the hair adjacent to the scalp, and a sectional rod swivelled to the clamp and having swivel connections between its sections.

10. In a hair waver or curler, a clamp having a drip cup provided with liquid sealed bottom and sides, and a hair engaging rod connected to the clamp adjacent to the cup whereby products of condensation will be received in the cup.

11. In a hair curler or Waver, a scalp protecting member having a part to receive the hair to be curled, a hair clamping member having spaced lower parts .for seating on the scalp protecting member and having a drip cup on its upper portion, spacing means carried by the second member and engageable with the scalp protecting member to hold the drip cup spaced above the latter member, and means toclamp the hair in the space between said lower parts of the hair clamping member.

l2. In a hair curler or Waver, a scalp protecting member having a part to receive the hair to be curled, a hair clamping member having parts for seating on the scalp protecting member and having a drip cup having closed sides and bottom on its upper side, spacing means carried by the clamping member and engaging the scalp protecting member to hold the bottom of the drip cup spaced above the latter member, and means to clamp the hair to said clamping member.

13. In a hair curler or Waver, a scalp protecting member, a member having hair clamping means, a drip cup spaced in its entirety to one side of the hair clamping means and a hair engaging rod connected to the clamping means.
