[Class 60] In a cylinder honing apparatus comprising radially-adjustable abrasive elements carried by a head which is rotated and reciprocated by a hollow driving shaft, an adjusting device which is carried by a fixed support and does not take part in the movements of the head produces relative movement between the hollow shaft and a rod co-axially arranged within it to effect the radial displacement of the abrasive elements. In the apparatus shown, a tubular driving shaft 47, rotated by a gear 72 and reciprocated by means not shown, is connected by a member 77 having ball joints at the ends to the honing tool or head, in which are mounted the radially adjustable holders 76 for the abrasive elements. The elements are adjusted by rotation of a screw 73 which causes axial movement of conical wedge members 74, the screw being attached to a rod 36b, connected by telescoping parts 36a, 36, 27 to a squared rod 26 which is rotated by a bevel gear 22 mounted in the upper part of a fixed casing 6. The gear 22 is rotated through gears 21, 16, 13, 12 and 2, of which the pinion 12 is trunnioned on a collar 8 fixed in the casing 6 and the pinion 21 on a collar 17 rotatably mounted in it. The gear 2 is carried on the top of a sleeve 1 to the bottom of which is secured the gear 72 driving the shaft 47, with the result that, when the collar 17 is held from rotation, the rod 26 is rotated at the same speed and in the same direction as the shaft 47 through the similar gear trains 2, 12, 13 and 16, 21, 22, the first train serving merely to prevent the reversal of motion which would occur with one train. During such operation, therefore, the rod 26 acting through the telescoping members in the shaft 47 rotates the adjusting screw 73 in the honing tool at the same speed as the head, maintaining the adjustment of the abrasive ' elements. To adjust the elements the rod 26 is rotated relatively to the shaft 47 by rotating the collar 17 on which the pinion 21 is trunnioned, causing the pinion to move as a planetary member and alter the relative rotation of the gears 16, 22. For this purpose the collar 17 is secured to a rotatable ring 15 having peripheral teeth engaged by a gear 25 which is rotated through helical gears 31, 32 from the adjusting device shown in Fig. 2. This comprises a rotatable disc 35 secured to the shaft 33 of the gear 32 and provided with a spring- pressed locking pin 61 engaging holes in a plate 56 and a withdrawable stop 66. The adjusting device is mounted on the lower part 6<a> of the casing.
