Abstract

429,682. Regulating. SWAN, A., GRIFFITH, A. A., and HELMORE, W., Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, Hampshire. Dec. 2, 1933, No. 33858. [Class 7 (vi)] For regulating the supply of fuel or other fluids to be mixed with the air supply, the metering-valve for such fuel &c. is controlled in accordance with the induction-pipe pressure, and if desired also with atmospheric pressure, and the pressure difference across the metering- valve is controlled in accordance with the engine speed, or the position of the air throttle, or both. The Figure shows one form in which the induction-pipe pressure is communicated by a pipe 2 to capsules 1 which are connected to evacuated capsules 3, and the whole attached to a lever 4 carrying the metering-valve 5. The flow of fuel &c. through this valve from a pipe 13 is controlled by a valve 9 attached to diaphragm 8, which is connected by a spring 10 and rod 11 to the air throttle, or to a centrifugal governor 12, or both. In a modification for regulating the supply of two fluids, one of the evacuated capsules 3 is replaced by an atmospheric one, and one of the fluid supplies is controlled by a diaphragm-actuated valve similar to the valve 9, and the other by a valve connected to two diaphragms, one of which is connected with the air throttle and the other is subjected to the pressure difference of a centrifugal pump driven by the engine. In a third form, the diaphragm controlling the flow of fluid communicates on one side with the suction side of a centrifugal pump supplying the fluid, and on the other side with the delivery side of the metering-valve, and is also connected to the air throttle. Shut-off valves may be provided for arresting the flow of fluid when the engine stops. Where liquids are to be metered, floats or sinkers are connected to the capsules.
