[Class 108 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In motor vehicles having independently-sprung front wheels mounted on pivoted half-axles 11 the pivots 16 for the two half-axles form part of or are carried by a unit 17 comprising part of or adapted to be attached to the chassis of the vehicle. In the constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the unit 17 is a @#-shaped bracket forming the means by which the transverse spring 19 is connected to the chassis frame. As shown in the left-hand half of Figs. 1 and 2 applied to an existing vehicle the existing solid front-axle is cut to form the two axle parts 11 and the unit 17 is clamped in position with its base 20 between the spring and a plate 21 forming part of the original attachment of the spring to the chassis. The original spring, stiffened by an additional leaf, may be used, or a flat spring may be provided as shown in the right-hand half of the Figures. The axle pivots 16 may have rubber bushes or linings to avoid the necessity for lubrication. Shock-absorbers for the axles may be fitted at 22 or 23. Radius rods 31 for the axle parts are pivoted at 33 to a frame bracket 34, the pivots being rubber lined and in alignment with the axle pivots 16. In Fig. 4, not shown, the spring is arranged below the half axles, its centre being secured to the bottom of the unit 17. This arrangement reduces the height of the frame attachment 21 which is then situated just above the axle pivots.
