Abstract
428,619. Swash-plate mechanism. WATTS, R. E., 30, Tinwell Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Nov. 16, 1933, No. 32008. [Class 80 (iii)] [See also Groups XXVI and XXVIII] An engine, compressor, or pump having an inclined crank-pin is constructed so that the axis of a cylinder, the axis of a crank actuated by a piston therein, and the axis of the shaft, meet in a point. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, piston extensions 7<a> carry pins 8 connected by links 9 to gudgeons 6 on a sleeve surrounding the crank-pin. The piston, alternatively, may have a forked extension directly connected to trunnions on a sleeve surrounding the crank-pin and free to move longitudinally thereon. The piston is oscillated during its reciprocation. Pairs of pistons in line may be connected to the same gudgeon pins. The piston is guided by a fork 10 with arms 10<a> engaging guides 10<b> on the extension 7<a>, which fork is mounted to oscillate in a step bearing 11. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, opposed pistons 7, and a single piston 70 of double area arranged at right angles thereto, are connected to operate the same crank. A modification is described wherein sixteen cylinders, arranged in radial, parallel groups, are connected to a single shaft. The radial pistons in the same plane actuate the same inclined crank through concentric, longitudinally-movable sleeves thereon.
