517,625. Four-stroke engines; driving-gear. WATTS, R. E. Aug. 2, 1938, No. 22823. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In an engine constructed according to Specification 450,972, [Group XXIV], comprising a crankshaft 2 with an inclined crankpin 3 and pistons 9 rotatable about and reciprocable along axes parallel to the crankshaft axis, each piston having fixed to it a member 14 having, its axis correspondingly inclined to the inclined crankpin and connected to it by means of variable effective length, one connecting-means of variable effective length comprises a link 15, Fig. 1, in one end of which the inclined members 14 can rotate, and to the other 'end of which are pivoted lever arms 16 projecting from sleeves 17<11> or 17<1> rotatable about the inclined crankpin. An alternative connecting-means is shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in which a sleeve 40 surrounds the inclined crankpin and is divided into two parts, each carrying an annular flange 41. A driving-member comprising two cheeks 42 spaced apart by distance pieces 43 is mounted on the sleeve between the flanges 41. A pin '45 carried by a link 47 slides in radial.slots 44 in the cheeks. The link carries a bearing 48 which connects the link to the inclined members 14 and allows the same to rotate, while the sliding of the pins 45 in the slots allows the length of the connecting-means to vary. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the crankshaft 2 has two adjacent oppositely-inclined cranks 3, and there are four pairs of coaxial cylinders arranged around the shaft with four pistons in the cylinders connected to each crank. At each end of the engine there is a common cylinder head 19 for four-cylinders. The engine works on the four-stroke cycle, and in each head there are two chambers 20 through which the charge to adjacent cylinders is admitted at 24, and two exhaust chambers common to adjacent cylinders discharging at 25. The inlet and exhaust valves 21, 23 are operated from camshafts 30 driven from the crankshaft by skew gearing 32, 33.
