Abstract

428,242. Master control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and CANS - DALE, J. H., 40, Murray Road, Rugby. Oct. 10, 1933, No. 27924. [Class 38 (iii)] Regenerative and non-regenerative braking.- A compound-wound vehicle motor M is accelerated and regeneratively braked by armature resistance and shunt field control effected by a master controller L, a braking controller V also being provided which, upon operation from an off position, opens contacts 23 and closes contacts 1 to effect or ensure the disconnection of the motor from the supply and the energization of its shunt field T, and also completes circuits for the coils 16a, 16b of a relay 16, the coil 16a being connected across the supply, and the coil 16b across the motor, so that when the back electromotive force of the motor equals the supply voltage the relay 16 operates to connect the motor to the supply for regenerative braking, further movement of the controller V strengthening the shunt field, and finally short-circuiting resistance connected across the motor disconnected from the supply. The initial operation of the controller V energizes contactors to open contacts 14, 15, so that shunt field resistance control by the controller L is prevented. The braking controller may be operated by the mechanical brake pedal. If the vehicle is required to coast the controller L is returned quickly from an operative position to the off position.
