Abstract

347,301. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and HASTINGS, H. C., 235, Clifton Road, Rugby. Jan. 30, 1930, No. 3222. [Class 38 (iii).] Master control systems.-In a control system for a compound wound motor A for propelling a vehicle in which a master controller P regulates the series resistance R1 .. R4 and the shunt field resistance r1 .. r4, an overvoltage relay V is provided for reducing the shunt-field excitation when the regenerated voltage is excessive. When the master controller is moved to position 1 coils N1, N2 are energized and the line switches L1, L2 closed. In moving from position 1 to position 5 contactors H1 .. H4 are energized to gradually short-circuit the series resistance R1 .. R4, and in moving from position 5 to position 9 contactors C1 .. C4 are energized to gradually decrease the shunt-field excitation. If, while the motor is running at full speed, the controller is suddenly moved from position 9 to position 5 the motor will regenerate at high voltage and actuate the relay V to open the circuit of the contactors C1 .. C4 and of the coils N1, N2, so that the shunt field excitation is decreased and the motor circuit opened. An aluminium cell E is provided to allow a discharge if the voltage generated reaches a predetermined value in excess of the line voltage while the contactors C1 .. C4 are opening. A reversing switch K is provided with contacts K5 to open the motor circuit and contacts K6 to reduce the shunt excitation when the armature connections are reversed. An emergency switch may be provided for placing a series braking resistance across the armature which is cut out step by step by contactors of the type disclosed in Specification 11349/11, [Class 38 (iii), Electric motor control systems &c.]. Specification 186,013, [Class 38 (iii), Electric motor control systems &c.], also is referred to.
