Abstract

<PICT:0426793/III/1> <PICT:0426793/III/2> <PICT:0426793/III/3> In order to separate water from petrol, the petrol is passed through a layer of anhydrous salt, such as sodium chloride, sodium sulphate or calcium chloride, and brought into contact with one or more rods which are stated to eliminate water by capillary attraction. Fig. 2 shows a device for purifying the petrol fuel of an automobile. A layer 7 of anhydrous salt is supported by a gauze partition 5 to which a rod 6 is connected. The petrol is admitted through a tube 3 with closed end and lateral orifices 4, and leaves through a gauze filter 10 and passage 11. Drops of water retained by the partition 5 are directed to an outlet 12. A similar form of apparatus is arranged for connection in the hose of roadside petrol distributers. Fig. 4 shows a form for use at a refinery. Numerous rods 6 are arranged beneath the end of the inlet pipe 3 which is enlarged and provided with a spreading dish 18. The salt is charged into a basket 21 with central perforated tube 21<1> and baffles 19, 20. The petrol passes to the outlet 11 through a filter 10 held in position by a spring 24 and a weight 23. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 6 rods 6 and a filter 10 are arranged in one vessel, to which the petrol is admitted through a pipe 3 with sections of successively increasing diameter towards the outlet end, and more rods 6 and a basket 7<1> for the anhydrous salt are provided in a second vessel 3<1>. The basket 7<1> may have apertures with jagged inwardly projecting edges which are not readily blocked by the salt. At the top of the vessel 3<1> are a grid 28 and a horsehair filter 30.
